2012

Happy New Year to you all!

Welcome back to the final year of the Kapiti Collaborative. We are in a position now to make this the most powerful year of all!  I will be back on board keeping the overall programme of the KC ticking along. This year we also have Janine Barnden from Learning Media to work with us. Janine’s expertise lies in the area of Mathematics.

The content of the programme this year will relate back to the overall vision and goals of the KC:

To improve learning and enhance teaching for the students and teachers of the Kapiti Coast.

Our goals:

The structure of the programme for 2012 will again include parallel strands running concurrently combining the foci of effective pedagogy, using ICT innovatively and mathematics.

·      Strand One: Mathematics Inquiry

·      Strand Two: Working Parties

·      Strand Three: Wednesday Wind-ups (formerly Thirsty Thursdays!)

·      Strand Four: Lead Team Days

What will each of strand entail?

Strand One: Mathematics Inquiry

Janine will assist a group of motivated teachers, (representative of schools who wish to participate), to inquire into the teaching and learning of mathematics in their classroom and across the school more generally. This will require teachers to look closely at mathematics assessment information and identify priority areas for in-depth focus.

Janine and the Mathematics Pedagogy Working Party will also identify aspects of Mathematics needing a focus across the cluster as a whole and organise professional learning opportunities for KC teachers.

Strand Two: Working Parties

The working parties this year will be:

·       Mathematics Pedagogy

·       ICT Events

·       Assessment Years 1–3

·       Cohort/Transition

More information will follow regarding the purpose of these groups, what teacher involvement will entail, and a call for teachers to register interest.

Strand Three: Wednesday Wind-Ups

These sessions (two per terms 1,2,3) will provide opportunities for all KC teachers and leaders to attend stimulating and motivating keynote presentations around aspects related to the goals of the KC. Dates for these events are attached and we ask that principals note these now and we will do our very best to keep to the schedule and not be tempted to spring any short notice events on you! There is also some information about each speaker to give you a sense of their focus.

Strand Four: Lead Team Days

These will be days where we utilise the keynote presenters for the day of the Wednesday Wind-Up to work with key teachers from each school. The focus for these days will be closely aligned to our cluster vision and goals. We will send out more information as time draws closer to these events and schools may send their most suitable representatives along. Again the dates are attached to this newsletter.

Please note the dates of KC events in your diaries and calendars and encourage staff to keep an eye on the KC website for more information. It may be an idea to assign a staff member to be the KC watchdog to keep the KC profile alive in your school.

Many thanks for your ongoing support in the work of the KC

Looking forward to an exciting year

Kaye and Janine
